{"id":345,"date":"2014-03-24T14:47:38","date_gmt":"2014-03-24T14:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sdafs.org\/tcafs\/?page_id=345"},"modified":"2014-03-24T14:47:38","modified_gmt":"2014-03-24T14:47:38","slug":"2008-meeting-home-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oldunitsstaging.fisheries.org\/tx\/tc-meetings\/2008-meeting-home-page\/","title":{"rendered":"2008 Meeting Home Page"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;font-family: Arial;color: blue\">TCAFS Annual\u00a0Meeting <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;font-size: large\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">January 17-19, 2008<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">by Tim Bonner <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<hr align=\"left\" noshade=\"noshade\" size=\"3\" width=\"40%\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Texas Chapter AFS annual meeting will be held at Texas Tech<br \/>\nUniversity-Junction on January 17-19, 2008.\u00a0 The theme for the Plenary Session\u00a0is Native fish conservation and game fish management\u2014Conflict or Compatibility.<br \/>\nThe meeting will consist of a kayak float trip on the South Llano River, two\u00a0Continuing Education courses, and an evening social on Thursday, a plenary\u00a0session, contributed session, and our banquet\/auction on Friday, and a\u00a0contributed session and TCAFS business meeting on Saturday.\u00a0 See below\u00a0information on program overview, registration, and lodging to help plan your\u00a0trip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><b><i>Program Overview<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Kayak Float Trip (Thursday, Jan 17, 10:00A)<\/b>\u2014Float a<br \/>\n5-mile stretch of the South Llano River in one-man or two-man kayaks.\u00a0 Bring\u00a0your own kayak and fishing gear if you like.\u00a0 The lazy float will cover some\u00a0prime Guadalupe bass and largemouth bass habitats.\u00a0 In addition, Texas State\u00a0University faculty and graduate students will be tracking radio-tagged Guadalupe\u00a0bass and conducting stream habitat and fish surveys.\u00a0 You are welcome to join\u00a0the crew to learn some of the latest techniques in tracking and stream surveys.<br \/>\nReserve your kayak with Janet Wisian (<a style=\"color: #2266cc;text-decoration: none\" href=\"mailto:jkwisian@txstate.edu\">jkwisian@txstate.edu<\/a>)<br \/>\nby January 10, 2007 or if you have any questions, please call Janet at<br \/>\n512-245-2284.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Continuing Education Seminar (Thursday, 3:00-5:00P)<\/b>&#8211;Modeling<br \/>\nGame and Non-game Species \u2013 Assessing Flow Dependent Needs with Dr. Thom\u00a0Hardy-Utah State University.\u00a0 This continuing education course will introduce\u00a0the concepts and technical approaches for assessing flow dependent physical\u00a0habitat relationships of stream dwelling fish species.\u00a0 The seminar will provide\u00a0an overview of management issues related to flow regimes where game and non-game\u00a0species are of mutual concern.\u00a0 This will then be expanded to examine technical\u00a0approaches that allow resource managers the ability to evaluate the flow\u00a0dependent spatial characteristics of physical habitat for multi-species\u00a0assemblages that can provide insights on flow regimes that provide\u00a0suitable\/unsuitable conditions for specific components of the fish community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Evening Social (Thursday, 7:00 &#8211; 11:00 PM)<\/b> &#8212; Dinner<br \/>\nand drinks will be provided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>Plenary Session (Friday, 8:00- 10:00A) <\/b>&#8212; Native<br \/>\nFish Conservation and Game Fish Management\u2014Conflict or Compatibility.\u00a0 Robert W.\u00a0Clarkson and others published an intriguing and stimulating essay on the\u00a0conflicts between native fish and non-native sport fishes management in Arizona<br \/>\n(Clarkson, R. W., P. C. Marsh, S. E. Stefferud, and J. A. Stefferud.\u00a0 2005.<br \/>\nConflicts between native fish and nonnative sport fish management in the\u00a0southwestern United States.\u00a0 Fisheries 30:20-27).\u00a0 The essay highlights the\u00a0problems associated with conserving natural resources and providing angling\u00a0opportunities.\u00a0 Mr. Clarkson will be the first speaker followed by Phil Bettoli\u00a0(Tennessee Cooperative Fishery Research Unit, Tennessee Tech University) and\u00a0Jackie Watson (Utah Division of Fish and Wildlife), who will present information<br \/>\non their respective state agency attempt to minimize conflicts between native\u00a0fish conservation and sport fish management.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><b>Registration <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Registration includes access to all\u00a0technical sessions, continuing education workshops, float trip, Friday &amp;\u00a0Saturday breakfast, Thursday night Student\/Professional Mixer, and Friday night<br \/>\nbanquet. The deadline for early registration is January 3, 2008.<\/p>\n<p><b style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Lodging \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Dorm rooms at the Junction Campus are as\u00a0<\/span>follows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">**The rooms are of two types. \u201cSuites\u201d (3-4 people to a<br \/>\nroom) with one bathroom per two rooms. The suites rent for $50 per night, which\u00a0can be split among those sharing a suite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">**The second type of rooms are \u201cStudy units\u201d, which have<br \/>\ntwo rooms, each of which accommodates 8 people. There are two bathrooms in each\u00a0study unit. These rent for $160 per night.
