The Joint Committee hosts quarterly webinars designed to foster communication between the members of the American Fisheries Society Bioengineering Section (AFS-BES) and the American Society of Civil Engineers Environmental and Water Resources Institute (ASCE-EWRI). These webinars provide opportunities for engineers and biologists to share relevant knowledge, learn from one another, and collaborate on projects related to fish passage.<\/p>\n
Webinars are coordinated by the Joint Committee’s Webinar Task Group<\/a> and are offered free of charge.<\/p>\n Future webinars will be recorded and posted on our YouTube channel<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n We hope you were able to attend our last webinar on December 3, “Improving Fish Passage on the White River: Operations, Monitoring, Modifications, and Maintenance”<\/strong> If you missed it, a recording is now available on our YouTube Channel<\/a> and is embedded below!<\/p>\n \n Stream simulation (SS) culvert design integrates fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, civil engineering, and biology to create natural, dynamic stream channels through culverts or bridges at road-stream crossings. Originally developed to facilitate fish passage, SS also produces extremely flood-resilient designs.\n <\/p>\n \n Key SS requirements include sizing a single-span structure wider than bankfull channel width, developing a natural streambed and banks at the appropriate slope, and ensuring hydraulic capacity with a headwater-to-depth ratio < 0.8 at the 1% annual exceedance probability flood.\n <\/p>\n \n The July 2016 flood in northwest Wisconsin\u2014over 8 inches of rain in 6 hours\u2014caused severe damage to road-stream crossings. Of 26 sites evaluated, 17 were designed using SS; 16 survived even though 13 overtopped.
