Originally developed to facilitate fish passage, SS also produces extremely flood-resilient designs.

Key SS requirements include sizing a single-span structure wider than bankfull channel width, developing a natural streambed and banks at the appropriate slope, and ensuring hydraulic capacity with a headwater-to-depth ratio < 0.8 at the 1% annual exceedance probability flood.

The July 2016 flood in northwest Wisconsin—over 8 inches of rain in 6 hours—caused severe damage to road-stream crossings. Of 26 sites evaluated, 17 were designed using SS; 16 survived even though 13 overtopped. A case study of these observations was published by the US Forest Service this past summer (https://doi.org/10.2737/NRS-GTR-231).

Join us for a webinar with the study authors to discuss:

Extreme flood characteristics and watershed variability

Factors affecting culvert survival and failure

Implications for future flood resilience and cost benefits

On the Day of the Webinar:

  Date: Tuesday, February 10, 2026
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM ET
Join:

Join Microsoft Teams Meeting

Meeting ID: 221 754 079 198 92 | Passcode: Pc9xQ6Qf

Participation is limited to 300 attendees (first-come, first-serve).
